International Economics & Public Policy (MA IEPP)

The Master's programme "International Economics and Public Policy" is an interdisciplinary programme jointly run by the Political Science and Economics Departments of the University of Trier. The programme combines application and research oriented courses. Students are trained to get an in-depth understanding of current topics and research in comparative and international political economy by using qualitative and quantitative advanced social science research methods. Students can choose among a wide range of topics related to e.g. problems of international economics, governance of the European Union or current developments in Asia.

Taking the interdependence seriously, the programme tries to look for effective and legitimate ways of governance and economic development in the 21st century.

The Master programme MA IEPP is designed for students in Political Science, Social Sciences and Economics who are interested in an interdisciplinary analysis of the interplay between politics and economics in an international context. Admission requirements include previous studies both in the field of Political Science and in Economics (at least 30 ETCS in each field, see Requirements for details). Graduates are prepared for career paths in the public and private sectors. The research orientation of the programme also qualifies students for a PhD programme.

The Master's programme "International Economics and Public Policy" is a two-year full-time programme consisting of 10 modules. In their first semester, students attend the following three modules: "Advanced Microeconomics ", "Macroeconomics/Econometrics" and "Research Techniques". In the second and third semesters, students attend modules in "Economic Governance", "Economic Policies", "Global Governance", "International Economics", "Energy, Climate, Environment, Health" and "East Asian Politics and Governance". In the fourth semester, students complete the programme with their Master's thesis.

In the course “International Economics & Public Policy” (MA IEPP), global interdependencies of social subsystems are to be analyzed for their side effects for the realization of political programs. Particular emphasis is placed on the knowledge and analysis of the interactions between politics and economics in an international context. The IEPP master’s course focuses on the international challenges of economic, financial and environmental policy; it sensitizes to global problems and trouble spots, especially in Europe and Asia. The English-language course pursues the central idea of ​​asking about the possibilities of effective and legitimate governance and business in the 21st century, taking into account political-economic interdependencies. Through the intensive treatment of theoretical concepts and practical fields of application from selected political science sub-areas as well as the structure that integrates economics, the students are given the opportunity to develop specific competence and specialization profiles.

The IEPP-Master extends over four semesters and comprises 120 ECTS points. It is an integrated course in which three modules are originally political science, three further modules are provided either by political science or economics or together, and another three modules are offered by economics.

    When teaching began in the 1970/71 winter semester, the core of Faculty III comprised the subjects of history, sociology, political science and geography with twelve professors and four academic staff. In the early years, the range of subjects, as was the case with the then part of the University of Trier, was tailored to the teaching degree programs. The great demand for teachers in the first half of the 1970s caused the number of students in Faculty III to rise sharply: from 66 students in the 1970/71 winter semester to 803 ten years later.

    1. Requirements for the Master's Programme "International Economics and Public Policy"

      1.  Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Political Science, Social Sciences or Economics (with a GPA of at least 2,7 according to the German grading system)
      2. Applicants with a degree in Political Science or Social Science must have solid knowledge in Economics (at least 30 ECTS, including statistics and mathematics). See the FAQ for more information about ECTS.
      3. Applicants with a degree in Economics must have sufficient background knowledge in Political Science (at least 30 ECTS).
      4. For students with a GPA between 2,7 and 3,0 the examination board decides individually regarding admission.

      MA IEPP is a joint program run by the Department of Political Science and the Department of Economics. Did you attend enough classes in Economics AND Political Science during your bachelor studies? Without enough credits in BOTH fields, your application will be rejected – don't bother to pay the application fee!

      Language requirements

      Applicants have to prove their language proficiency in English by one of the following tests which should have been taken within the last three years:

      • TOEFL (TOEFL-code: 9208): internet based: at least 80 points, computer-based: at least 215 points; paper-based: at least 550 points.
      • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English
      • IELTS with at least 6.0 points
      • UNIcert III
      • C1 certificate for CEF
      • Certificate of a degree in an English-speaking BA programme (or equivalent) in an English- or German-speaking country.
